According to those familiar with the situation, the catalyst for the discussions was a July essay written by Google DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis, who proposed a US-led Standards Body modeled on the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. The standards body, Hassabis argued, should test advanced AI models before deployment. Hassabis said the body should be a public-private partnership, overseen by the government but funded by the industry and staffed by "independent leading technical experts and open-source representatives."

五、长难句速拆
原句：The conversations preceded the events of the past week, when a former Anthropic researcher resigned, saying the top AI companies were not "behaving responsibly" – and also before Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed embedding third party watchdogs at AI companies.
主干只有三个词：The conversations preceded the events。后面 when 引导的从句不是问「什么时候」，而是给 the events of the past week 定位，等于说「那段时间发生的事就是这些」。再往后的 saying 是分词，跟着 a former Anthropic researcher，交代他辞职时说了什么；分词的主语要往前面的那个人身上找，不是 the events。破折号后面 and also before 又并进一个时间状语，跟前半句的 of the past week 对齐，合起来的意思是：这些对话发生在两件事之前。读这类句子别从第一个词开始顺译，先把最外层的时间关系拎出来，再往里填谁做了什么。
六、考场应用
这篇稿子里，事实的可信度是分层的，动词也跟着变。people familiar with the situation told CNN 是匿名信源；reportedly advised、Politico reported earlier this month 是把消息再转一手；The Information first reported on the conversations 交代谁先发的。阅读题爱拿这些动词出细节题和推断题，问「哪一项是已确认的事实」，答案只会落在 CNN 自己核过的那部分。做题先圈信源，再判断。
proposed embedding third party watchdogs at AI companies 里的 embedding 是动名词，直译「嵌入第三方监督者」在中文里不成句。中文习惯把动作摊开成短句：「主张在 AI 公司内部派驻第三方监督者」。凡遇到 propose、advocate 后面挂动名词，先想中文里那个动作怎么用动词说出来，再决定主谓往哪儿摆。
雅思 Task 2 写科技监管、政府与企业责任这类题，本文现成的对立面是：行业自建标准机构，对上政府主导的独立监管，再加上扎克伯格劝阻特朗普、议长说业界毫无共识。写「谁该为新技术定规矩」，把这两条路摆出来，比单说「政府应加强监管」有内容得多。

注意 up to 在这里不是「多达」。这句你打算怎么翻？
