Simone Stolzoff has held a lot of jobs in the past 13 years. Before his current role, he was a marketer for an ad tech company, director of communications at a food start-up, design lead at a studio, a magazine staff writer and freelance reporter. Each move, he says, has brought new experiences even if he has not always advanced in seniority.
"Instead of a series of rungs on a ladder, [my career moves] look more like a series of lily pads, each hop a new opportunity for growth," he says. "Some moves came with salary bumps, and others came with salary cuts. I've been willing to accept less money to find more meaningful work."
【lily pad】 /ˈlɪli pæd/ n. The frog jumped from one lily pad to another.
【rung】 /rʌŋ/ n. He finally reached the top rung.
【seniority】 /ˌsiːniˈɒrəti/ n. Seniority matters less than skills now.
She hopped from ad tech to a start-up.
【salary bump】 /ˈsæləri bʌmp/ n. 加薪(反义:salary cut 降薪) He moved for a salary bump, not a title.
The approach — which some HR leaders call "lily padding" — prioritises acquiring new skills and experiences by moving laterally through shorter-term roles in different organisations and sectors, often informed by the idea that fulfilling careers cannot be provided by life-long employers but pursued by individual workers themselves.
The approach prioritises acquiring new skills and experiences,就是「这种做法优先考虑的是获取新技能和新经验」。 often informed by the idea that... 最后 that 从句里藏着一处省略:cannot be provided by life-long employers but pursued by individual workers themselves, pursued 前面省掉了 cannot be,否定只落在「雇主提供」这一半,肯定落在「个人争取」那一半。
He is not so unusual
第 4 段 cannot be provided by life-long employers but pursued by individual workers themselves, pursued 前省掉了 cannot be:否定只管「雇主提供」,肯定落在「个人争取」,照字面直译会前后不搭。 Rather than assuming one employer will provide long-term security 同理,rather than 引的是没做的事,主句才是实情,中文把「而不是……」
Rather than assuming one employer will provide long-term security, many professionals are trying to create that security for themselves.
