Artificial intelligence arrived on campus as a crisis but has since become banal. Students can now do basically all their schoolwork automatically with AI—answering scientific problem sets, writing computer code, and drafting essays. Professors like me have no idea whether we are really teaching or just LARPing for students who are also pretending to occupy their role. Worse, some of us are offloading the drudgery of writing recommendation letters, grant proposals, and even scientific papers to AI.

That's what I thought at first too. But I've come to the conclusion that something bigger, stranger, and more damaging has been taking place for a long time. AI has combined with two other recent campus crises—the coronavirus pandemic and the research-funding cuts of the second Trump administration—to amplify a deeper truth: American college is incompatible with itself. Americans speak of "college" as if it is one coherent thing. That's wrong. Higher education is a bundle of unrelated things held together by custom, history, and accident. The college bundle was always a tenuous one. It has little reason to remain together, even as the institutions inside it are too entrenched to separate.

五、长难句速拆

原句：Even at these schools, the humanities are particularly vulnerable to AI, because the intellectual labor that the technology can now eliminate—wrestling with the meaning of texts, figuring out how to express complex ideas—is the fundamental point of that type of education.

主句很短：the humanities are vulnerable to AI。难点全在 because 从句里：主语是 the intellectual labor，后面挂一个 that 定语从句，说「AI 如今能替掉的那种脑力活」，紧接着又插进一对破折号，把它具体说成「跟文本较劲、琢磨怎么把复杂想法讲清楚」。等插入语结束，谓语 is 才露面。主语和谓语隔着二十多个词，先把插入语整块摘掉，再看 is the fundamental point 接的是谁。另外，that 的先行词是 labor，不是 technology。

六、考场应用

That's what I thought at first too. But I've come to the conclusion that... 是全文的转折轴。这种「我一开始也这么想，后来改了主意」的写法，等于把两个观点摊在桌上：前一个是常见误读，后一个才是作者立场。考研阅读问「作者的主要观点」，错项几乎都从转折之前那半截摘出来，比如「AI 正在撕裂高等教育」，而那恰恰是作者要推翻的说法。

作者把大学称作 a bundle of unrelated things held together by custom, history, and accident。要论证「某事物名不副实」，这个句式很好用：先摆出通行的整体说法，再用 a bundle of ... 拆开它。示范一句：The "gig economy" is less a system than a bundle of arrangements held together by convenience。

雅思 Task 2 写高等教育或 AI 与学术诚信，本文有两条现成论点：大学同时承诺发学位和让人长大，这两件事可以拆开；研究给学校带来经费与声望，本科教学则更像保住学费来源的必要动作，两者存在张力。

再看一句：
